NWACC's New Leader the Top Story in Your 7 at 7:00

Northwest Arkansas Community College has a new leader after the board of trustees comes to a unanimous decision earlier this week. Doctor Evelyn Jorgenson will become the NWACC's third president.
She comes from Moberly Area Community College in Missouri where she spent 16 years as president there. She's scheduled to begin at NWACC July 1 following the retirement of Dr. Becky Panietz. Who's served as NWACC's president since 2003.
The University of Arkansas will have to wait one month before it finds out if the city of Fayetteville will help pay for a state-of-the-art performance hall. The school plans to renovate the old field house into a 650 seat performance hall. The project is estimated to cost about $17 million and the UofA asked Fayetteville's Advertising and Promotions Commission to pitch in $1 million, saying the new facility will bring extra tax revenue to town. On Monday, commissioners decided to postpone a decision until December.
Also during Monday's meeting, the A&P Commission awarded money to other projects around Fayetteville. More than $145,000 awarded to the following organizations: Fayetteville Underground, Theatresquared, Fayetteville's Annual July Fourth Freedom Fireworks Event, and Fayetteville High School's boys and girls state basketball tournament. The Commission meets twice a year to award funds to groups needing financial help promoting or starting an event.
An infectious disease is on the rise here in the Natural State. With an outbreak Tuesday in central Arkansas, the Arkansas Department of Health is seeing more and more cases of whooping cough. The Health Department says fewer folks are getting their immunizations and less immunizations means more infections. Statewide, only 5-10% of adults get the Tdap vaccine. While, the disease doesn't take as much of a toll on adults, it can be passed to children and even become deadly. Health officials encourage anyone around a newborn to get vaccinated.
Arkansas wants to help more babies have a healthy start at life. The state is partnering with the Health Department and local hospitals to make new-born health a priority. With a goal of reducing the premature birth rate by at least 8% by 2014. According to the Arkansas March of Dimes, a non-profit group promoting pregnancy and baby health, the state has improved over the last five years in the pre-term birth rate. However, the state still scored a "D".
This week marked the first time for public services at the Fayetteville National Cemetery since students moved into the apartments across the street. Back in May, there was a lot of concern that the apartments would disrupt veteran ceremonies. But so far, cemetery officials say they haven't had any problems. In fact, a few students took short cuts through the cemetery, but as soon as groundskeepers spoke to them, they apologized. Cemetery employees say they haven't had any problems with students since.
It's been a very rough season for the Hogs, but you can still show the Razorbacks they have your support. A limited number of general admission tickets for next Saturday's (Nov. 24) game against LSU have been released by the University. The tickets are those returned from the student allotment and are just $25. The annual battle for the Golden Boot will be in Fayetteville for the first time in 20 years and will be broadcast on national TV. To get tickets, click here.
