Traffic Relief Coming Soon to Fayetteville

By: Jay Dillon
Updated: November 16, 2012
As you head off to work this morning you may find yourself stuck in traffic, especially on College in Fayetteville, but good news: relief is coming!

A new flyover has been approved near the Northwest Arkansas Mall and construction will be starting soon. The flyover will start near Millsap and go over 71B to the Fulbright Expressway. It's expected to alleviate congestion and in turn safety for the area. The city has six bids from construction companies. Once chosen, work will likely start in January with a completion date set for the middle of 2014.

Nearly 80,000 people drive I540 in Fayetteville every day. Just recently, a section of it was widened to six lanes. But the white lane markers dividing some of those lanes are starting to shred off, posing a hazard for drivers. According to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department the tape is directly on top of a joint in the pavement between the outside lane and the shoulder. Water seeping out of the joint may have led to the tape not sticking properly. The new tape will take about 24 hours to be put in, which means one lane of traffic will have to be shut down to do the work.

Springdale is closing off a main artery Saturday morning. The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad will be replacing the railroad grade crossing on Huntsville Avenue starting 8:00 a.m. Huntsville will be closed at the railroad crossing to thru traffic until 4:00 Sunday afternoon. A marked detour will be in place and motorists are urged to be extra cautious in the area.

A river barge highway system is in the works between Fort Smith and Fayetteville. Mayors from both cities met Thursday with other leaders to discuss moving forward with the project. A barge system is already in  place but this would deepen it from nine feet down to 12 feet, costing $20 million. The change would increase the amount of goods that can be transported by 40%. This group hopes to have a plan in place to present to legislators in a couple months. Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan hopes to see a partnership between the corps of engineers and the private sector to help pay for the project.

We are your Local Election Headquarters and last week, Benton County voters made their voices heard; approving alcohol sales. On Friday, those votes will be certified. Restaurants and gas stations can already request applications, but the Alcohol Beverage Control says it will likely be January before any permits are issued. Liquor stores can start filing applications in December, but those stores won't start showing up until June or July.

A tax break could be on the way for Arkansas families. Governor Mike Beebe presented his budget to lawmakers this week. One of his top priorities: repealing the tax you pay when you buy groceries. Taking it from 1.5 cents to 1/8 of a cent.

Saturday is your final chance this  year to pick up some fresh produce at the Fayetteville Farmers Market.  The market opens at 7:00 a.m. wraps up at 2:00 p.m. on the downtown square. The Fayetteville Farmers Market was named as America's Favorite Farmers Market of 2012 by American Farmland Trust.
