From January to March, seven percent of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 13 percent expect to reduce their payrolls. Eighty percent of companies expect to maintain their current staff levels.
Next quarter, job prospects appear best in durable and non-durable goods manufacturing. Employers in construction, transportation and public utilities, wholesale and retail trade, and services plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in finance, insurance, real estate, education and public administration is expected to remain unchanged.
Nationally, of 14 thousand U.S. employers surveyed, 23 percent expect to add to their payrolls during the first quarter of 2007, while 11 percent expect to reduce staff levels.
Sixty percent expect no change in the hiring pace, while six percent are undecided about their hiring plans for the first three months of the year.
