Police Ask Folks to Keep an Eye on Vacant Properties this Winter

By: Amanda Ashley
Updated: November 30, 2012
Fort Smith police are asking for help to prevent fires in vacant structures during the cold winter months.

According to the department, homeless may look to these properties for shelter, but it can quickly turn into a fire hazard.

Whether intentional or accidental, a fire started inside a vacant space can spread fast, said the department. These blazes can be tough to battle because, according to the police, the structures are often not structurally sound creating hazardous situations for fire fighters.

They are asking folks to keep an eye out for unlawful activity in or around empty properties, especially at night.

To report suspicious activity or trespassing inside vacant structures, contact the Fort Smith Police Department at (479) 709-5100.
