Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has withdrawn her name from consideration for secretary of state.

President Barack Obama released a statement Thursday about Rice's decision to withdraw, saying, "For two decades, Susan has proven to be an extraordinarily capable, patriotic, and passionate public servant."

Rice had been considered the frontrunner for the post, which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she would vacate as soon as a successor is confirmed.
