Newly elected State Representative Dan Greenberg filed the proposal Wednesday....he says naming buildings and streets after living people is "somewhat distasteful."
If you travel around Northwest Arkansas, you don`t have to go far to find landmarks named after people who are still alive.
There`s the Bobby Hopper Tunnel on Interstate 5-40...and a portion of 5-40 itself is named after former Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt..who is still living.
Then there`s the Harrison post office, which now bears Hammerschmidt`s name as well.
But a new proposal could change the way the state names future landmarks.
State Representative Greenberg says he filed the Edifice Complex Prevention Act because "...we`re building temples to people that are living," he says.
Greenberg says the act would only apply to tax-payer funded landmarks and not affect anything already named.
He says the act isn`t aimed at any particular party or person, he feels it`s a "...bi-partisan problem at all levels of government."
