According to the proposal, from 1999 until today Fayetteville City Council monthly pay sat unchanged at $700 per month.
In that same time period, the Mayor's pay increased an average of about 3% per year, so a proposal was made to match that growth in pay for Aldermen, increasing their monthly compensation to $1,042 per month, not including benefits.
If the Mayor's pay increases again, the amount will automatically be changed to match the increase.
Council members voted unanimously to approve the resolution. The Mayor's compensation will remain unchanged.
Proponents of the resolution cited the need to be competitive with surrounding communities as one of the reasons the increase was necessary.
