Springdale Girl Dies in Car Accident

A seven-year-old girl is dead after a single-car accident in Springdale Sunday.

Police say they responded to a one vehicle accident on Old Wire Road just North of Dodd Ave Sunday.

Upon their arrival they say the seven-year-old, Sarah R. Christians, and the driver were both trapped inside.

Paramedics had to use the jaws of live to remove the driver, 27-year-old Clare Smith.

Both occupants were taken to Northwest Medical Center for their injuries but the young girl was then air lifted to Children's Hospital in Little Rock where she was later pronounced dead.

A State Police accident report lists both Christians and Smith as Springdale residents.

Smith told police she had just gotten off her phone and beleived she went off the roadway where the shoulder drops into a ditch.

After reconstructing the accident, Springdale Police charged Smith with careless driving and failure to use a child safety restraint.
