A Benton woman bedridden by a medical condition has been saved from her burning home by a local police officer.

The Benton Police Department's Officer Chris Goss pulled the woman out of her home on December 26, the BPD revealed in a news release Thursday. Her name was not included in the news release.

The fire broke out around 10 o'clock that morning on Derby Road. When Officer Goss arrived on the scene, he reported seeing thick, black smoke coming from all four sides of the roof.

When a neighbor told him the woman was in a back bedroom, the officer rushed inside. Despite seeing smoke throughout the home and flames shooting from one room, he then crawled below the smoke to reach the woman.

As the fire intensified, Officer Goss picked her up and carried the woman out a back door and to a neighbor's house, where she was treated on the scene by paramedics.

Police did not release any details about the fire, how it started, or how much damage the home had.
