A new evaluation system will meet teachers in the new year. It's called Teacher Excellence Support System, also known as TESS.

"We've always gone into classrooms and observed teachers and observed their teaching skills. Now, we just have a much more universal rubric that we can compare the teacher skills to that rubric," said Doctor Kathy Morlidge with Springdale Schools.

There are four ways teachers are graded: planning, preparation, classroom, environment and professionalism. For teachers who do not reach the intended score, TESS provides other routes for success.

"Teachers who are falling short of being able to perform to the levels of expectation can be placed on an intensive support track. We want to go in and provide that level of support so that teachers can grow and learn so that they can begin to improve their instructional skills," said Morlidge.

A new evaluation for educators, reaching for excellence in the classroom.
