Arkansas Deer Hunters Set All-Time Record

By: Charles Frazier
Updated: January 9, 2013
With several weeks left in the season, Arkansas deer hunters have already had the best deer season ever recorded.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas deer hunters have checked more than 210,000 deer which far surpasses the old record of 194,192 set in the 1999-2000 season.

Modern gun and muzzle-loader hunts are done, but archery hunting continues through Feb. 28.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, there are three reasons for the big jump in the number of deer checked by hunters.

One reason is the abundance of deer in the state as wildlife biologists estimate a million or more deer in Arkansas today partly thanks to deer restoration projects that began in Arkansas almost 90 years ago.

The AGFC also says favorable weather was a contributing factor. With a lack of rainy weather days, the record was already broken by the Christmas snow storms.

The third factor, according to the commission, was more lenient seasons and limits this year.

There was a six-deer limit this year and while some deer hunting zones have lower limits, hunters were able to go to multiple zones to reach that limit.

According to records of license sales, the number of hunters in Arkansas didn't increase significantly, but the number also didn't decrease as it did in many other states.

Union County came in as the top location for number of deer checked in but Washington County, surprisingly, came in second. The other top eight counties are all in South Arkansas.
