Phasing Out Trans Fats

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
Both Jose`s locations in Fayetteville and Springdale have traded their normal cooking oil for trans fat free oil. With all the recent health warnings, trans fats leave a very bad taste in the mouths of the health conscious. So just in time to help those determined to keep their new year`s resolutions, Jose`s decided to switch to a healthier oil to fry their food in. Studies show trans fats increase the risk of heart disease and is often used to extend the shelf-life or flavor of food. Jose`s conducted taste tests before switching oils to make sure their signature taste didn`t suffer. "We`re known for our chips and salsa so we wanted to make sure it wasn`t affecting the flavor of our food...we actually had some people say that our chips were better," says owner Doug Allen. The Springdale jose`s location has used the new oil for about a month now, and Allen says he hasn`t regretted his decision. "It does cost a bit more, you`re probably looking at 20-30 % more for the oil, but if it saves one life then it`s worth it."
