Counterfeit Money Moving Through Sebastian County

By: Amanda Ashley
Updated: January 21, 2013
Over the weekend, police said several counterfeit $20 bills were passed in the Hackett and Bonanza area.

The counterfeit $20 bills were discovered at Mitchell Country Store in Bonanza, the Dollar General in Hackett, and the Hugs and Biscuit Convenience Store in Hackett.

The bills appear to be some sort of scan or copy of a $20 bill that has been copied front and back and then glued together.  So far, all have had the same serial number.  These counterfeits appear to be thicker and a little heavier than a normal bill, according to reports.

An investigation is under way to determine who is passing and making this counterfeit currency.  Counterfeiting of US currency is against the federal and state law.

Folks are reminded to slow down and examine the currency that is being passed.  Remember if it does not look right or feel right, it probably is not.  True currency will have a crisp and clear print on it (no blurry edges or designs).  The paper feel and quality is unique as well.  The key to detection of counterfeit money is to look for differences not similarities.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office at 479-783-1051.  If you suspect that you may have received or are now in possession of a counterfeit bill, contact law enforcement immediately.
