The city of Fayetteville is giving away weatherization kits filled with "do it yourself" projects to improve efficiency.
Fayetteville's housing rehab program helps low income homeowners cut bills by stopping energy loss, but Community Block Grant money only goes so far.
"We 're limited in how many total housing projects we can do a year," says community services coordinator Kelly Colebar. "At least this gives them the opportunity to start doing some energy efficiency work on their homes."
The custom weatherization kit is packed with DIY projects, including a low flow shower head, a window insulation kit and switch and outlet sealers, pads slip behind your switches and outlets to stop drafts.
"It never even occurred to me before we got into all of this that that's a place where your home potentially loses energy," Colebar says. "I don't know anybody of any income level that doesn't get concerned with their energy costs, but especially if you're a low or moderate income family anything that can help you with your finances is a great thing."
The city spent $55,500 for 1,500 kits, and Colebar says the program is stirring up a lot of interest.
"We've been getting lots of phone calls," she says. "We anticipate that we will see the kits going out the door very quickly."
To qualify for the program you have to own a home in Fayetteville, and you must meet HUD income guidelines you can find at this site.
To apply, bring a utility bill and proof of income, like a social security statement, tax form or current W-2 to the city of Fayetteville's Community Services Department at 125 W. Mountain St.
