The University of Arkansas' Office for Sustainability is stepping up efforts to conserve resources on campus.

The office has been around for years, but it just moved to a new more visible location, and along with the new spot comes an aggressive approach to student involvement.

"We are here to serve students," says executive director Marty Matlock. "In the process of serving students, we're also serving the world."

Matlock says the office works to provide students with opportunities for research, internships and networking with sustainability experts.

But to achieve the university's goal of a carbon neutral campus by 2040, all students need to get involved.

The office is working to get students to use recycling bins placed all over campus, and it has plenty of activities planned to make students more aware of the importance of conservation.

"The world is more prosperous than it's ever been before, but with that prosperity comes a challenge," Matlock says. "The challenge of living in a global system that has limited resources, we're competing for those resources in increasing intensity."

The school is participating in Recyclemania, a national recycling competition right now. In April the campus will try to cut energy and water usage at dorms for the Campus Conservation Nationals.
