Police: Wreck Causes Gas Leak, Driver Runs from Scene

Fayetteville Police arrested a man they say caused a gas leak and evacuations near the U of A campus before running from the scene.
Police were called to the area of Eastern Ave. and Stone St. near the University's surplus warehouse Tuesday afternoon. officers say that the driver struck a sign and a gas meter before running away.

A Fayetteville Officer chased after the driver and caught up to them a short time later.
The accident caused a large gas leak which, according to Fayetteville fire crews, led to a brief evacuation of nearby homes. University Police are handling the accident investigation because of the damage to University property. Fayetteville Police are leading the criminal investigation.

They say they're performing tests on the driver to determine if he might have been driving under the influence, but charges are expected to be filed.
