The city of Springdale is preparing to start building a new exit off Interstate 540 after years of planning and saving up cash.

"The interchange is something that we've been working on for a long time," mayor Doug Sprouse says. "It's really exciting that it's finally about to start."

Sprouse says the city is just waiting on federal approval, and it could be a matter of days before advertising for bids on the project begins.

Businesses are already looking at the area, and a Casey's General Store was approved to move in at the corner of Don Tyson and 48th Street earlier this week.

Sprouse believes the area around a new exit off I-540 has huge potential, but it will take careful planning to fully realize it.

"When somebody's going to invest a lot of money, putting a business in, they want to be sure something isn't going to move in next to them that's gonna hurt their investment," he says.

The interchange will also connect Don Tyson Parkway to the west side of town, where the city has even more projects scheduled to help spur economic growth.
