City Approves Wedington Corridor Plan

By: Rebecca Jeffrey
Updated: March 20, 2013
After a year of planning Fayetteville City Council has approved the master plan to revitalize the Wedington Corridor.

"Not only has there been a lot of development but there's still potential for significant additional development," Peter Nierengarten,  Director of Sustainability and Strategic Planning said.

The Wedington Corridor now holds 20 percent of Fayetteville residents, yet it's 30 percent undeveloped. However,  that will change starting with the I-540 interchange.

"The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department is planning on reworking that entire interchange," Nierengarten said.

The master plan shows the potential for a roundabout. But that's not the only street change in the works.

A "Boulevard Plan" would change the make up of the west side.

"It'll help improve some of the left hand turn conflicts, and provide for greater ability for through traffic to move along Wedington Drive without being congested by many of the turning movement," he said.

Plus Nierengarten said they want to create a more complete neighborhood with a central hub.

"We proposed kind of a core, a heart for the neighborhood, near the intersection of Rupple Road and Wedington Drive.

Which Nierengarten said would help connect the West side. But his favorite part?

"I'm really excited about the improvements to the pedestrian and bicycle connectivity that we proposed."

New paths are expected to be constructed in the next 2 to 3 years going North and South down Shiloh Drive.

But Nierengarten said the master plan is not set in stone as this long range plan can change as residents see fit.

"By no means does what we drew on this plan necessarily dictate that that's exactly the way things are going to build out," he said.
