State's Federal Judge Passed Away

George Howard Jr., died at Jefferson Regional Medical Center Saturday, he was 82 years old. Howard was the first to accomplish many things throughout the span of his life. He was the first african american in the state to hold a position on the Claims Commission, Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals. He also was the first african american in the state to become a federal judge. Howard graduated from the UA law school and was the first african american to hold a student office at the U of A in 1952.
