What this boils down to: The domestic partner ordinance was orginally geared toward the elderly who cannot officially marry for financial reasons, but still need to get under some health insurance for their families. Some in Eureka Springs told us that other media outlets have taken the angle of this story as being a quote "gay issue," and was specifically designed for the gay and lesbian community. Eureka Springs Mayor Dani Wilson dispells those reports. And despite the scathing and supportive editorials in newspapers, she says the "gay issue" is not an issue. She says this is more about the elderly who have to make a decision to either eat, or go to the doctor. Wilson also said, "We have a broken health care system. And until it is fixed, this is something we can do to help the people of Eureka Springs."
