Heifer International is an organization committed to ending hunger and poverty around the world. The organization brings awareness to these issues though its Global Gateway program at the Heifer International Ranch. For the last eight year students in Kirksey Middle Schools gifted and talented program in Rogers participated in the Global Gateway program.
On Monday, students made the trip to the Perryville ranch and divided into groups to experience the hardships of people living in third world countries. The students were asked to make a choice, kill a rabbit and have meat for dinner or let the rabbit live and dine vegetarian. All 30 students had to vote in favor of eating the rabbit to have it killed. If just one student objected the rabbit would live. Every student agreed, so a man broke the rabbits neck and decapitated the animal in front of the students.
Rogers school officials say they sent letters to all the parents of the students participating in the program informing them of a meeting about the trip but, some parents say they never got the letter. Rogers school officials declined an on-camera interview with KNWA, although a spokesperson says a letter was sent to the parents and that parents were also encouraged to call and ask questions about the trip.
