citycouncil2007-05-04-1178317232.jpgThere's a riff between the police chief - and a couple of city councilman - and it's so bad - the chief quit this week. Chief Billy Dunn says he decided to resign because two Elkins city council members have continually harassed him ever since he took the job 2 1/2 years ago. Dunn wouldn't talk with us on camera, but says council members Bruce Ledford and Bobby McGarrah have a personal vendetta against him, saying "I've been nothing but harassed by these two people....they do nothing but go out and drum up bad business in Elkins, they're old men with nothing better to do." Dunn says when he submitted his resignation, he made an agreement with the mayor that he would work until June first. At Thursday night's city council meeting though, Ledford wanted the council to dismiss the chief immediately and pay him out. Dunn says that's when he decided to take back his resignation because he says he's "tired of getting attacked by these people." Elkins Mayor Jack Ladyman says he doesn't know if Dunn can legally retract his resignation. And he is moving forward with the search for a new chief. Councilman Ledford wouldn't go on camera either, but did tell us it's unfortunate the meeting got out of hand and he thought it would be better to pay Dunn and let him go. For now the issue is tabled. The council will discuss it again in a couple of weeks.
