(Bentonville, AR) Wal-Mart has launched announced a Solar Power pilot project in 22 of its Wal-Mart stores, Sams Clubs and distribution centers in Hawaii and California.
Wal-Mart hopes to eventually supply all of its stores with renewable energy.
Each solar power generating system installed can provide up to 30 percent of the power for the store on which it is installed. By Wal-Marts estimates, installing the solar power systems will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6,500-10,000 metric tons per year.
Wal-Mart officials also expect the solar powered stores to see savings on their utility bills.
SunEdison LLC will provide the four solar power systems in Hawaii and four in California, while PowerLight, a subsidiary of SunPower Corporation and BP Solar will each supply seven systems in California. The systems installations are subject to receiving the appropriate permits and approvals in their respective states.
Wal-Mart is currently testing renewable energy technologies, such as wind and solar power generation, in its experimental stores in McKinney, Texas and Aurora, Colorado.
