Lexi Thompson from Coral Springs, Florida, is too young to watch an R-rated movie, but she is allowed to play in the U.S. Womens Open, which begins Thursday. In doing so, Lexi becomes the youngest ever to score a spot in the most prestigous tournament in womens golf. Dont let the flowery footwear fool you, Lexi Thompson is a serious golfer. So serious, Scott Thompson, Lexis father, says she draws some interesting looks from people. "Definitely in disbelief that a 12-year-old can hit the shots that she hits. She still amazes me with the shots that she hits," he says. Daddys little girl has a big swing, and Lexi used it to make history by qualifying for the U.S. Open just four months after her twelfth birthday. "Just to make it to the Open when Im this young, it was a dream to come true," Lexi says. At five foot, six inches and still growing, Lexi can hit the ball 230 yards off the tee, but when it comes to her drives and her future, the skys the limit. "Even as excited as we are now, we know that shes going to continue to get better. This is just the beginning of a career thats going to be successful undoubtedly," says golf pro Bryan Stone. But how does a 12-year-old get this good at golf? Well, Lexi literally grew up on a golf course. Her backyard is the twelfth hole at Eagle Trace, a PGA Tour-level course. But when shes not playing golf, she is an average 12-year-old. "She loves to go to movies, she likes to swim in the pool. She goes out back fishes with her brother, feed the ducks," her dad says. Of course its only natural to compare Lexi to another female golfer who captured the worlds attention at a very young age: Michelle Wie. "You know, were kind of going through the circuit a little differently. You know Michelle Wie went right to almost the big show at an early age, and were going to focus on the junior stuff for now," says Thompson. So what can we realistically expect from 12-year-old Lexi when she takes on the best female golfers in the world? "I dont know, Im so young. I dont know. [I want] to do well. If I make the cut, thatd be great. If I win, oh my God," says Lexi. You can watch the final two rounds of the Womens U.S. Open this weekend on KNWA.
