A national trend showing a decrease in sales tax revenues in the United States has made its way to Northwest Arkansas. Washington County has seen a drop, but Benton County has seen an increase. The financial director for the city of Fayetteville, Paul Becker, tells KNWA that competition from Benton County for consumer dollars has crept up. However, he also says that since the competition coincides with a national slump in sales tax figures, new business in Benton County is not the sole reason for low figures reported just south. In addition to some major new fast food chains moving into Fayetteville, Becker hopes a new movie theater and Sams Club will do their part in boosting economic welfare in Washington County.
