breaking news
Birthdays, weddings and baby showers are all events that require cakes. Some Chicago bakers are cooking up creations most party-goers have never dreamed of, including one for a movie thats opening nationally Friday.
Its a labor of love, and an art form. Thats why sisters Brenda and Mary Maher are known as "the Cake Girls".
"Every time we would make a cake and deliver it people would say, Ohhh, the Cake Girls are here!" Mary says.
That name took them all the way to Hollywood this month, where the countrys top cake makers competed to make the winning cake for the Simpsons Movie premiere. The competition aired Wednesday on the Food Network
"We thought Krusty [the Clown] represented us the most. Hes a little crass, a little fun," Brenda says.
"We chose to make him out of Rice Krispy Treats, so that was kind of an interesting twist," Mary says.
The sisters utilized 100 decorating techniques in just eight hours.
"There has to be a dowel rod all the way from the bottom to the top of the cake to support it, so Mary is putting Krusty in, and he doesnt fit. At that point, we end up yanking his arm out of his side. Mary shoved him down and she shoved his arm back in, and we were literally back in business," explains Brenda.
From Bart and Homer to the popcorn, it all had to be edible, but the Cake Girls say its everyday orders that bring the biggest thrill.
"As long as its edible well try it, try to create a different way to structure it or paint it or airbrush it, and I think that kind of keeps us looking unique and fresh," Mary says.
A place where you can have your cake, and eat it too!
