Bizarre Fort Smith Shooting

By: Carley Gordon
Updated: February 29, 2008
A grandmother admits to shooting and killing her grandson`s estranged wife. Heather Mizell, 25, was shot and killed at Edna Higgins` house in Mountainburg. Mizell went to Higgins house after Higgins offered to pay for Mizell`s slashed tire. Higgins refused to go on camera, but says she shot Mizell after Mizell attacked her with a hammer, something Mizell`s mother, Becky Sides, says her daughter would never do. Sides explains, "Anybody that knows my daughter, has ever known my daughter... If my daughter is gonna whoop you or go on you she `aint coming with you with nothing, she`ll do it with her bare hands." Sides blames Jimmy, Mizell`s estranged husband. Sides says, "I have no doubts Jimmy didn`t have something to do with it." Sides says she thinks Jimmy and Higgins planned to murder Mizell to avoid a divorce. Sides explains, "It was a set up, they hoaxed her, they got her down there and killed her. She was filing divorce papers, and the reason she was filing divorce papers was abandonment and abuse on Jimmy and his drug use." Police aren`t releasing much information about the case. They say they haven`t made any arrests, but they are reviewing evidence recovered from Higgins house.
