While checking to see if a piece of property was inside city limits, Greenland Police Chief Gary Ricker made a startling discovery-- part of the elementary school sits over the city limit line and in Washington County. The school, built nearly 40 years ago, had somehow slipped through the cracks all this time. Ricker believes a propane tank used to heat the high school long ago is to blame. "I believe that's roughly where the big propane tank was, when they probably annexed this in, maybe back in the 30's or more, they left that out because of the propane tank." Ricker wasn't the only one surprised by his finding. "First I was a little shocked and then more amused than anything, because materially it's not going to affect anything," says School Board President Bill Groom. "It's just really puzzling for it to be in Washington County," says parent Susan Kelley. "This was a shock to me and I want to see that it's taken care of," says resident Steffani Willey. And that's exactly what the school board plans to do. Board members will hold a public hearing before the next council meeting to pass an ordinance to annex the rest of the school into the city. "We're soon going to take care of it and all the t's will be crossed and the i's will be dotted," Groom says.
