Competing with the worlds largest retailer isnt easy, but doing it in Wal-Marts own backyard maybe even harder. Harps Grocery opened its 53rd store, Wednesday. The new location is in Rogers. Sam Walton was only 12 years-old when Harvard and Floy Harp opened the first Harps Store in Springdale. The year was 1930 and for the next 60 years Harps grew to become one of the biggest grocery store chains in Arkansas. Then Wal-Mart began opening supercenters in 1992.
Harps President Roger Collins said his company has changed to meet the growing needs of the community, and to compete with the world largest retailer in a backyard big enough for both. "Theyre a great competitor and we feel like weve been successful. So we fell like there is room for both of us," said Collins
