Tuesday, a judge granted a temporary injunction against the Moffett Police Department, and now the department is banned from patrolling most of Highway 64 and 64-D.
There’s a big territory dispute and one of the areas in question is a stretch of US Highway 64 in Oklahoma.
Businesses like the Cheyenne Gentleman’s Club in Roland claim the Moffett police wait outside their parking lot to pull people over.
The Sequoyah County Board of Commissioners thinks Moffett cops are illegally patrolling parts of other towns, including Roland.
The Board says Moffett didn’t follow proper procedure when it annexed some land in 2006. This caused some confusion over where Moffett cops can patrol.
A lawyer representing the Board, Fourth Scoufos, says "The sole reason they’re doing that is to enhance the profits and to enhance revenue thats generated by writing tickets… There are no legitimate community interests that are being served by patrolling those streets."
The Moffett Police Department says it’s not doing anything illegal, and that as of today, they’re still patrolling the Highway.
Kathy Luper, Chairperson of Moffett’s board of trustees, says "We have heard rumors that we are being kicked off of Highway 64, but we have not been served anything at this time."
Scoufos disagrees. He says, “The ruling became effective immediately, and for the Moffett police department to now take the position that, well, we haven’t been served with anything formally and therefore were gonna keep doing it, I think is bogus.”
