Middle School, Police Investigate Abuse Complaints

By: Kyle Leyenberger
Updated: May 7, 2012
Police are investigating an employee of Gentry Middle School after several parents filed complaints that the man abused their children.

Police have not released the name of the man involved, or the nature of the abuse, because the investigation is still in the early stages.

The school district also declined to release the information, but Superintendent Randy Barrett wants parents to know their kids are safe.

"There have been some complaints, and the school had performed its own internal investigation," he says. "The employee in question is not at school and will not be for the remainder of the school term."

Barrett understands parents are concerned, but hopes they don't rush to judgment before the facts come to light.

"I would just encourage parents to talk to their own children," he says. "Wait until all the investigations are concluded before they draw conclusions of what might or might not have happened."

He says in his district, the kids safety is a top priority.

"Their parents have entrusted with their care for a school day, and we take that very seriously," Barrett says. "When our students are here obviously we are not only their teachers but we're acting as their guardians."

The complaints involve children from the sixth grade, and the chief of the Gentry Police Department urges parents of the middle schoolers to talk to their kids, and to call the police with any concerns.
