GE Brightest Classroom February Week 2

The children in my classroom are very excited about saving energy. We've learned about conserving our resources as a class. The children have "applied" for very important jobs that help us conserve energy. We have "hired" two children in charge of turning off the lights when we leave the classroom and four children in charge of turning off the computers and monitors at the end of the day. The rest of the class is very willing to remind those who forget to turn something off. Also my class enjoys turning off the overhead lights and working with a few lamps turned on. This saves a lot of energy since I only have three one bulb lamps for them to work with. We also recycle and reuse scrap paper for art projects. One thing I love about teaching first grade is my student's wonderful enthusiasm. The children in my class are very enthusiastic about conserving resources and I feel that they will continue to realize the importance of conservation as they grow older.
One thing I would use the $500 gift card for in my classroom is for some more lamps and energy efficient bulbs. Some children have a hard time concentrating under the bright overhead lights. I've found that working with a few lamps helps those children focus a little better. Right now I have three lamps that provide some light but need a few more as well as more energy efficient bulbs. Another thing I need in my classroom are individual CD players, batteries, and storybooks with CD's. A component of our literacy program includes listening to reading so it would be great to have enough players and stories so that any child who wanted to listen to a story had the supplies to do so. And finally, I would spend the rest of the $500 gift card on my students. Many of my students have no access to school supplies or books when they are at home. I also provide snacks for a couple of students to take to lunch each day. Thank you so much!
