New Research Links Gene Variants to Autism

By: KNWA News, Lauren Johnston
Updated: February 11, 2013
Twenty-five gene variants that are linked to autism have been identified in a study at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, according to a US News Health report.

This new research could become a part of a new clinical test to determine whether a child has an autism spectrum disorder.

Doctors at CHOP analyzed DNA and discovered that these variations occur in the development of neurons in the brain.

Study author Dr. Hakon Hakonarson says the research could play a big part in advising parents who already have one child with autism, and helping them predict if a second child is likely to develop it.
