Cyclists hit the pavement Sunday while advocating an important message in Northwest Arkansas.

The 8th Annual Highway 71 Classic kicked off bright and early Sunday in Fayetteville.

Bikers participated in 32-mile and 72-mile tours as well as a 55-mile dirt road "gravel grinder" ride.

The event was held to help promote education about city bicycle riding to cyclists and motorists. Organizers say that they hope to make Northwest Arkansas more bicycle-friendly.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks, who oversees a bicycle education program within Fayetteville Public Schools.
