Southside Students Seek Community Support for Shanty Town Event

By: Bobbi Smith
Updated: February 4, 2013

On February 9th Southside High School students are camping out of the front lawn of school to raise awareness about poverty housing in our area.

The Southside High School Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity Students will each pay $10.00 'rent' for the experience of sleeping in a shanty house that they will build themselves. Each tenant will be given cardboard and duct tape when they arrive at the event. They are advised to bring warm clothes and plastic to protect their shanty house from the moisture.

The students hope to increase awareness about poverty housing in our area and also raise funds to help the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity in their mission of eradicating poverty housing. Their fundraising goal is $10,000.00.

Students are asking for community support of monetary donation. Donations may be dropped off on Saturday night, February 9th or may be mailed to:

Southside Campus Chapter

P.O. Box 754

Fort Smith, Arkansas 72902

All funds raised by the Southside Shanty Town will be donated to Arkansas Valley habitat for Humanity.
