It's official. The sequester cuts are shutting down 149 regional airport control towers nationwide and one of them is at Drake Field. The FAA made the announcement Friday as part of an effort to help meet $637 million in forced spending cuts. The plans involve closing the towers over a four-week period starting on April 7th. Critics worry shutting down the towers could impact safety. But the FAA says it will manage the system by reducing volume, not reducing safety. That means air travelers heading to major cities like New York and Chicago could experience big delays during peak hours. Your can see the entire list of air control towers being closed across the country here.
