The numbers are in, and last night's season 12 premiere of American Idol was viewed by nearly 18 million people.  Although it's down from last year's opening episode it still drew the biggest audience for the premiere of a singing show this season.

Episode two two took us to the windy city.

"Very impressive, very impressive," said judge Mariah Carey.  "I have to say Chicago had a lot, and has a lot."

Optimism was running high for the second day of auditions, and we learned judge Keith Urban can relate to the contesetants.  Urban says he auditioned for an "Idol-like" show when he was a kid.

"I think I went on a show called 'Pot of Gold' in Australia," explains Urban.  "And uh this guy, one of the judges, completely crucified me and it left a lasting impression on me."

As for impressing the seasoned country superstar?  Sometimes it's knowing which songs not to sing!

"Sunday Morning by Maroon 5," says Urban.  "We love that song but we're done with that.  And probably just Adele period.  We love Adele, but we're done with those songs.

Finally --- let's catch up with some former Idols.

Kellie Pickler is giving back in a big way.  The Idol alum  will auction off her truck, with all proceeds benefitting the "USO warrior and family care" program.

And former "American Idol" judge Kara Dioguardi is going to be a mom.  The grammy-nominated songwriter confirms she and husband mike mccuddy will welcome their first child via gestational surrogate in the coming weeks.
