Internet Safety Message Delivered at Springdale School

By: Tyler Thomason
Updated: January 24, 2013
"Today we're having an Internet safety assembly," says Tyson Middle School principal, Susan Buchanan.

It wasn't in the form of a Facebook notification.

Or a Twitter mention.

But Springdale students were on the receiving end of an important message Thursday afternoon.

"This is the prime age, you know, they aren't in their cars driving around yet, but they're out on the Internet," said Carol Robinson, a prevention and education instructor for Attorney General Dustin McDaniel's office.

"Sharing about their lives, sharing pictures."

She makes the trip to Springdale to tackle potential troubles that could stem from improved technology.

"You know, everything is supposed to be 'faster' we're supposed to get to share that much more," Robinson said.

And a big part of Thursday's message: oversharing. It's something Robinson  wanted to make sure the students were aware of when it comes to social media sites.

"Share less!" Robinson said, "and think before you put it out there."

Counselor Danielle Henderson said sharing and online chatter can sometimes lead to feuds that find their way from the computer to the classroom.

"Maybe someone is upset the next morning over what was posted, or what someone said online last night," Henderson said. In addition to the risk of TMI going public.

"It goes into many more hands than they could possibly ever dream," Robinson added.
