Fayetteville city officials broke ground on the 7 million dollar and much anticipated flyover at the intersection of 71 Business and the Fulbright Expressway.

"This is a very exciting day for taking this city to the next level and i'm excited to be here," Mayor Lioneld Jordan said.

Drivers will start seeing progress within a few short months.

"They'll be working outside the road way kind of in among all of the various routes here and you'll start seeing bridge piers go up," City Engineer Chris Brown said.

But to get better, traffic has to get a little worse. Street closures are scheduled for March.

"We'll actually close some of these routes for short periods of time mostly during the overnight hours and that's when it'll really start looking like a bridge," Brown said.

But Brown said that congestion is just a part of the process.

"Obviously, that will be disruptive to traffic, we recognize that. It's one of those necessary things that's a part of construction to keep everybody safe, the workers and the drivers."

Construction crews plan to kick it into high gear, working to beat their Summer of 2014 deadline.

"Folks will really be surprised at how quickly it moves forward, you'll see things growing out of the ground very quickly."

Giving residents hope that this project was worth the wait.
